The Goldbergs – I Love The 80’s

The GoldbergsIt’s no secret, I love The Goldbergs.  As of today we are 15 episodes into a 22 episode first season run.  I can’t believe we only have 7 episodes left this season.

The show is set in the 80’s and is told in kind of a Wonder Years format by the Adam, the youngest child.  The show does a great job of referencing the 80’s while not making it the focal point of the show.  It’s just a sitcom about a typical family dealing with everyday issues.

The casting of Wendi McLendon-Covey (Reno 911) and  Chicago’s very own Jeff Garlin (Curb Your Enthusiasm) was pure genius.  They make this show go and while they play over the top parents, somehow it’s still believable.

But really what I want to talk about in this post is the music from the show.  I can’t think of another show that has used music any better than this show (sorry Scrubs, you were close).  So let’s take a look at some of the music featured on the show.  I’ll try to give some background leading up to the song, please forgive any errors.  My memory is sketchy at best.  I watch a lot of TV, which isn’t exactly good for the brain.

Episode 1 – The Circle of Driving

Barry gets his license to drive and the grandfather loses his driving privileges.  The mom is upset because the kids are getting older and needing her less.  In the background plays this little gem…

Episode 3 – Mini Murray
After seeing a scary movie the mom exploits Adam’s  (the youngest child) fears to get more hugs.  The dad fires their older son from the furniture store because he wants more for him.  They all patch up their problems with this little tune…
Episode 5 – The Ring
Adam asks his dad for help wooing a neighbor girl.  He’s told it’s all about big gestures.  If it’s the 80’s you know this is going to be the song playing…
Episode 15 – Muscles Mirsky
Adam thinks he has a crush on a girl who is his best friend after they both watched When Harry Met Sally, cause you know men and women can’t be friends.  As he realizes that’s not true, he runs to her house to save the friendship with this song as the inspiration…
Talking about this show makes me feel like I’m a guy from a commercial.  How can you not love Peter Gabriel?  Well now TimeLife music has brought all the music you love together and made it a TV show called The Goldbergs.  It’s on every Tuesday night on ABC.
