I am an unabashed fan of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. I’ve been a fan since the early 80’s and I have never left. I know it’s cool these days to talk about how SNL isn’t as funny as it was when __________________ and ____________________ were cast members, but that is what people have always said. When John Belushi left, people said SNL was dead. When Eddie Murphy left, people said it was dead. When Phil Hartman left, people said SNL was done and yet here we are, 37 years later, and they are still bringing it week after week.
Is every skit funny? Of course not. Those of you who look back with rose colored glasses though and reminisce about the good old days forget that there were bad skits too when your favorite cast member was on the show.
Lorne Michaels’s (I actually Googled when to use an apostrophe with words ending in S because I couldn’t remember…the answer was here) ability to find new talent and turn them in to stars has been proven over and over again. Other than Jerry Seinfeld, the best way for a comedian to get rich and famous is to do a stint on Saturday Night Live.
Now that I’m off my soap box, let me give you a couple of the skits from last night that I thought were funny or really good. I already talked about last night’s show being great and apparently, America agrees with me because the ratings for the show last night were very good and they are up 11% overall from last season.
Here are a couple fo the skits I thought were funny:
Mokiki starring Taran Killam and Keenan Thompson. This is a kind of Digital Short but without Andy Samberg and The Lonely Island, they can’t call it that. So this video is whatever they call their produced video segment these days:
The opening monologue with Anne Hathaway and most of the cast. She is starring in the upcoming LES MISERABLES (watch the trailer, I’m a big nerd for this musical and it looks like it is going to be amazing) which will be released on Christmas Day so they did their version of One Day More discussing how excited they all are to have the day off tomorrow.
Did you notice Taran Killam again? That guy is crazy talented which is why I am predicting that he is going to be a break-out star from the cast.
The SNL commercial:
Again, it was a funny night. I continue to be a big fan of SNL.
