Can something be a disaster and a success at the same time? Tomorrow night, we are going to find out. For some unknown reason, NBC has decided to air a Sound of Music live special starring Carrie Underwood.
I think this is an amazingly stupid idea. A live version of The Sound of Music? Why? Did NBC do some market research that told them the people are out there clamoring for a new version of this classic? I doubt it. NBC doesn’t seem to actually do any market testing at all for anything they put on the air. NBC subscribes to the throw it all against the wall and hope that something turns in to Seinfeld school of TV programming. They don’t really have any idea what they are doing over there which makes me pretty confident in my belief that this show is going to be a disaster.
While I think it’s going to be a disaster, that doesn’t mean that people aren’t going to watch. Country music fans are a loyal bunch. Put a southern twang and a steel guitar in it, and a country music fan is going to watch, no matter what. Carrie Underwood has an extremely loyal following. She can’t do any wrong. Put her in a musical remake of Ishtar and her fans would flock to it. I will probably receive death threats for even daring to suggest that the Sound of Music Live is going to be a disaster.
If you haven’t been exposed to any of the press surrounding this show, here is a first look that was released by NBC:
The Sound of Music Live airs on NBC tomorrow, 12/5 at 7:00. I’ll be watching because I am very interested to see how this turns out.
