Things are certainly coming up LEGO lately. They have a hit movie out right now, sales for LEGO products are up 13% over last year, and now this latest news. Fox has announced the air date for The Simpsons LEGO episode.
The 550th episode entitled “Brick Like Me” will air on Sunday May 4. For those of you TV fans out there keeping track of sweeps, this episode happens to be airing on the 2nd Sunday of sweeps season. Hmm. Weird.
In the episode, Homer wakes up in a world where everyone is a LEGO and he must figure out how to get everyone back to normal. It’s been quite a while since the writers have done a gimmick like this but they have done something before. Way back in season 7, in 1995, the Treehouse of Horror VI episode, Homer was sucked in to a black hole that took him out in to the real world. This was the first time that any of the characters interacted with the real world in a cartoon/live action shot. While the LEGO episode is not exactly the same thing, it’s not totally new territory either. This one though is no doubt financed by the LEGO company who is doing a great job pushing their products this year.
I haven’t watched The Simpsons in a long time because it just hasn’t been funny or relevant. Other shows like South Park and Family Guy have done a better job taking over the edgy territory that The Simpsons used to firmly occupy. I will mark May 4 on my calendar though and I will plan on watching this episode. While it’s clearly a product placement ad for LEGO, I’m ok with that because I love Lego. I’ll be watching to see what they do with this episode and to see how Lisa will find a way to preach to everyone.
