The ratings gurus over at TV By The Numbers are giving one of my favorite shows a below 50% chance of getting renewed and this has me somewhat upset. I’m here then having to talk to you America about why we need to save Brooklyn Nine Nine.Brooklyn Nine Nine airs on Fox on Tuesday nights at 7:30. Let’s see what airs against it so we can figure out what it is that the rest of you out there are watching instead of this show.
Here’s what is on network TV and the ratings from last week:
Broadcast primetime final ratings for December 3, 2013:
|Time||Net||Show||18-49rating||18-49 Share||Viewers Live+SD (million)|
|7:00PM||NBC||The Biggest Loser||2.1||6||6.76|
|ABC||Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.-R||0.8||3||3.45|
Ok so Brooklyn Nine Nine is the only 30 minute show airing in the 7:00 hour. Look at CBS. What is it about that network that I don’t get? Are they paying you people to watch their shows? 12.6 million people watching NCIS? Really? Do you have it on in the background or something because I refuse to believe that all of you are really watching this show.
The Biggest Loser is getting 6.76 million? Ok fine. I doubt that anyone (women) who is watching The Biggest Loser would be a fan of Brooklyn Nine Nine so that doesn’t really count.
Those are the two network shows that are beating Brooklyn Nine Nine. One is a show for women and the other? Seriously I don’t get it. There must be some kind of mind control being broadcast through America’s TVs.
How about cable? Is Brooklyn Nine Nine losing viewers to cable? Let’s look at Tuesdays ratings from last week for cable shows:
Tuesday cable ratings: (all Live+Same Day ratings):
|Show||Net||Time||Viewership (000s, Live+SD)||Adults 18-49 rating (Live+SD)|
|Sons Of Anarchy||FX||9:00 PM||4577||2.5|
|Big Bang Theory, THE||TBSC||8:30 PM||3283||1.4|
|Big Bang Theory, THE||TBSC||9:00 PM||2909||1.2|
|Big Bang Theory, THE||TBSC||8:00 PM||3016||1.2|
|Family Guy||ADSM||10:00 PM||2289||1.2|
|Big Bang Theory, THE||TBSC||7:30 PM||2902||1.1|
|Robot Chicken||ADSM||11:00 PM||1791||0.9|
Those are the 10 highest rated cable shows on Tuesday night. Now what is interesting first is the standard between network and cable for what is a hit and what is going to get cancelled. Sons of Anarchy is a huge hit and one of the highest rated shows on cable but look at how many people watch. Compared to a network, not that many. If Brooklyn Nine Nine were on cable, people would be calling it the greatest show ever made. Also, I’d like to point out America that 3 of the 10 highest rated shows on cable on Tuesday night are reruns of The Big Bang Theory. Seriously?
So it’s not cable that is drawing people away from Brooklyn Nine Nine. I have to blame the two network shows that are drawing better ratings and for that, I have to blame you America.
Let’s talk about the show a bit. What is it that you don’t like? I can understand that some of you, particularly those of you who would like CBS, might not like Andy Samberg. He’s hysterically funny. That is offputting to people who don’t understand humor and who need CBS to tell them what to like. I get that. Here’s something you might not know about Brooklyn Nine Nine though. Andy Samberg, while the big name that got the show off the ground, is not the solo star of the show. Brooklyn Nine Nine is an ensemble cast full of good people who help take the focus off Samberg so those of you who are turned off by very funny people have other people you can focus on.
Let me tell you who the real star of Brooklyn Nine Nine is. It’s this guy right here:
That’s Andre Braugher who plays Cpt. Ray Holt. In the world of comedy, which fans of CBS might not understand, there is a formula for comedy duos with a funny man and a straight man. It’s worked since the beginning of entertainment. On Brooklyn Nine Nine, Andre Braugher plays the straight man to Samberg’s funny man. The funny guy gets the laughs but it’s the straight man that makes a comedy duo famous. Here are 10 of the best straight men in comedy. Check this list and tell me how memorable these men were. If Brooklyn Nine Nine survives, Andre Braugher’s name should get added to that list. He is the best straight man I’ve seen in the last 10 years at least. As the most polished and talented actor on the show, he makes it look effortless. When you think comedy, Andre Braugher’s name is not one that usually comes to mind. He’s best known for some of the most serious dramas in entertainment (Glory, Law and Order) but he is absolutely stealing the show from Samberg. If it weren’t for Braugher, Samberg would be incredibly annoying and not funny at all. Having Braugher there balances him out and through his masterful straight man performance gives you a better understanding of how funny Samberg is. Andre Braugher should win an Emmy for his performance but I’m sure he won’t. It will go to someone from some HBO show or from Modern Family because those are the safe and easy choices for voters who need to have things explained to them very slowly.
What’s great about Brooklyn Nine Nine is that it’s not just Samberg and Braugher. There is an ensemble cast full of people who are funny. Chelsea Peretti plays the civilian assistant to Cpt. Holt, Gina Linetti. Peretti is one of the funnier parts of the show as well. Again, it’s not all about Andy Samberg. There are other people that are very funny on this show that make it well worth watching. Peretti has been a stand up comedian, a writer for Saturday Night Live, a voice in video games, and a podcast star with comedian Marc Marron (I listen to his podcast. If you like podcasts, his is worth a listen). Chelsea Peretti brings another brand of cynical humor to the show to act as another base to the acid that is Andy Samberg (yea check that out. That’s a chemistry reference. Suck is Ms. Fallatico. You thought I didn’t pay attention in HS chemistry but I did). If you have been staying away from Brooklyn Nine Nine because of Andy Samberg, you should tune in to watch Chelsea Peretti. However annoying you think Samberg might be, she more than makes up for it with funny.
Rounding out the rest of the ensemble are Joe Lo Truglio (The State), Terry Crews (The Expendables), Melissa Fumero (Gossip Girl), and Stephanie Beatriz. All of these people have their roles on the show and they all play them very well. While I think Fumero’s character is the most annoying on the show, she is written to be that way so she’s doing her job well.
The break out star for me from this group is Stephanie Beatriz. Playing a character that is part of an ensemble, it is usually difficult to develop an identity. Beatriz has been able to not only build an identity, but she has done so well that the writers have written more focusing on her relationship with others in the department. Again, this is not focused on Andy Samberg.
Let’s put all of this in terms that the average CBS watcher can understand. Think about the show that most of you can’t get enough of, The Big Bang Theory. Remember when it first started? Was Sheldon the focus of the show? No. He wasn’t. Jim Parsons was an unknown and Sheldon was just going to be one of the friends. What happened? The fans started to love him and after a while, Sheldon basically took over the show and now look, The Big Bang Theory is a big ensemble show now that doesn’t focus on just one or two characters.
That is what you have the chance to do here with Brooklyn Nine Nine, Sure Andy Samberg is the reason that the show got the green light. He is hugely famous from his time on SNL and with The Lonely Island. He can be very annoying to people though and if that is the reason that you are not watching Brooklyn Nine Nine, then you are making a mistake. There are enough other good people on the show that the focus is slowly turning from just Samberg to the cast as a whole. If you don’t start watching, we are not going to get the full development of this cast and we are all going to lose out.
People. We must save Brooklyn Nine Nine. We have very few comedies on TV that are not on CBS or are not Modern Family. If it’s not one of those two things, then people don’t watch. We have got to change this. There are more things that are funny out there people. Give it a chance.
Brooklyn Nine Nine airs on Fox on Tuesdays at 7:30. If you have to watch CSI or The Biggest Loser, DVR Brooklyn Nine Nine. DVRing a 30 minute show means you really only have to invest about 20 minutes in the show. Is that asking too much?
