There’s no news quite like renewal news because renewal news is when the investment you made in the show that you watch pays off in an entire seasons’ worth of dividends. Some renewals are confusing (ARROW? Really?) and some non-renewals are downright infuriating (THE RIVER). Thankfully, news of three of them came at us recently for that little extra piece of mind.
First on the list is a no-brainer, but still a relief: GAME OF THRONES was insta-renewed for a fourth season the day after its Season 3 premiere. This season has been better than ever so far and I’m not quite sure if I could go on watching TV if they DEADWOOD-ed it after three seasons.
History Channel’s VIKINGS was also renewed for a second season. As I’ve mentioned before, I am not exactly sure what the appeal is, but there is a pretty big dedicated fanbase with each episode surprisingly/consistently having over 4.5 million viewers. What genre would VIKINGS fall in? Not quite a documentary but not quite a drama… How about an “EduDrama”? If that moniker is not already taken, consider it mine.
Third on the list is A&E’s BATES MOTEL which just today was renewed for a second season. This is especially good news seeing as the show has been consistently strong/creepy/compelling every week so far. It has also been breaking records for an original drama series on A&E and no doubt pleasing a few network execs along the way.
Now my fingers and toes are all crossed for HANNIBAL to continue strong enough with its new episodes to break the Thursday night curse. Good ‘ol MIDWEST MILLER might not be so convinced, but rest assured its worth a watch. Bear in mind that BRYAN FULLER has at least 4 seasons of this show planned out, so I’m hoping it doesn’t wither and die because of poor ‘strategery’ on NBC’s part.
