Is Pee-Wee’s Playhouse coming back? It just might be. Actor Paul Reubens gave an interview to Rolling Stone to talk about the upcoming release of the show on DVD.
Shout! Factory (the same people who released WKRP with original music) have completely remastered all 5 seasons of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse and will be releasing it to the public next week. That in itself is good news for fans of the show who up until now, had to go to YouTube to watch episodes. Now they will have a box set with each show remastered and looking fantastic.
So we know that the old show is being released on DVD. What about bringing it back? Is that even possible? Reubens is now 62 years old and has been doing well in other roles (he’s shown up recently as a creepy dude in The Blacklist). Can he play Pee Wee convincingly still? Maybe. But is it even possible that this show could make a comeback over 20 years after leaving TV? Check out this exchange between Rolling Stone’s David Fear and Reubens:
One last question: There were some rumors going around that you were working on another Pee-wee movie. Any updates on that?
There’s going to be a big announcement any minute now.
Yes. It’s been months and months of being right on the verge of being announced…I thought something was going to go public yesterday, actually, and that you’d be the first person I’d be talking about this with. But I’m thinking there will be something made public very soon. It’s going to get made shortly after the new year. I wish I could tell you about it right now, because…I mean, it’s amazing. It’s going to be amazing. It think it first got leaked four years ago or so that the movie was going to be made, and ever since then it’s just been stalling and stalling. So I’m really ready for this to happen. But I’m not kidding: It’s very imminent.
So yes. It seems somewhat certain that Pee-Wee’s Playhouse is coming back. I don’t know what that would look like now or how it would even work, but it seems that something is in the works.
I was a fan of the show but that was 20 years ago. I might watch it again but that would be more for nostalgia than for actual entertainment. I don’t know if Pee-Wee is still funny. A lot has changed on TV in the 20+ years since Pee-Wee was on. What was avant-garde humor back then would be very campy today.
I’m curious but really I’m thinking that this is one project that probably shouldn’t be done. Let Pee-Wee rest in peace and let us keep all of our good memories. Don’t bring him back just to cash in and destroy the memories and legacy of Pee-Wee. That’s what I’m afraid will probably happen.
