Netflix has broken ground as the first company to receive Emmy nominations for an online only show. The incredibly outstanding Kevin Spacey drama House of Cards has received 9 nominations from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and Arrested Development received 3 nominations (including 1 for Jason Bateman in the lead actor category). Hemlock Grove got in the game with 2 nominations of their own bringing the total number of Emmy nominations for Netflix to 14. That is pretty amazing. Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, was even surprised by how well the company did today: “The number of awards this morning was sort of a shock for everybody. We didn’t plan a big enough party.”
While Netflix may be the first online company to receive a nomination, don’t think that they will be the last. TV is heading in a new direction. Back in 1999, HBO became the first cable company to receive an Emmy nomination for The Sopranos. Now cable TV dominates the Emmys. In another 14 years will the networks even be around? Well, if they keep putting out shows like 2 Broke Girls, then we can only hope they are gone.
Congratulations to Netflix for producing such outstanding content on your first go round. I am very much looking forward to Season 2 of House of Cards, and Netflix is already in discussions for a 5th season of Arrested Development. There are more good things coming in the future for fans of good television.
