MODERN FAMILY delivered tonight. ABC ran two episodes back to back to help give their new show NASHVILLE a stronger lead in than THE NEIGHBORS and both episodes delivered.
The highlights for me:
In the first episode, Cam and Mitchell meet a lesbian couple played by Wendi McLendon-Covey (RENO 911) and Michaela Watkins (she had a cup of coffee on SNL), and the cattiness (is that a word? It is now. ) between Cam and Wendi’s character is hysterical because everyone loves jokes about stereo-types.
In the 2nd episode, Phil and Claire are dropping their daughter off at college which is a bit too real for me since I’m about to be in the same boat, but they handle this otherwise sad situation with both humor and feeling. It’s one of the best parts of the show, that they are able to take situations that in other shows would quickly turn in to a very special episode of Blossom, but keep it funny with feeling.
Striking a balance between funny and feeling is something shows struggle with but MODERN FAMILY has found a way to make it happen regularly. This ability to find balance is probably what makes this show so popular. Well that and Sofia Vergara’s boobs. Maybe more of the 2nd.
