This is my second post in a single day that involves the New York Yankees. I haven’t read the Bible in a long time but I am pretty sure that I remember a section in there that says if anyone discusses the Yankees 3 times in a single day, that the end of the world will be upon us. We are 2/3 of the way there with this post. I will try not to post another Yankees article today but I can’t make any promises. Please get your affairs in order just in case or, if you are like me, prepare for an epic round of rioting and looting after the goody goodies all get blasted up to heaven.
Some of the best commercials that have been on TV over the last 20 years have been the series of commercials for This is SportsCenter. The first of these commercials premiered 20 years ago back in 1994. They are produced by the Portland, OR based advertising agency, Weiden+Kennedy (they produced the Derek Jeter commercial as well) and they have become a fixture in American pop culture. If you are doing a list of classic TV commercials (and I am soon), there will be This is SportsCenter commercials on that list.
This new one isn’t going to be one of those forever classics, but it’s not bad. What I like about the Metallica This is SportsCenter commercial is that Metallica themselves have gotten on board with the idea. I love it when non-sports people do these commercials. It really shows how sports is a huge part of our culture and that no matter what your level of interest is with sports, there are some things that we all know (like the Yankees are evil).

I’m on record as not being a very big fan of the Yankees, but Mariano Rivera is another issue. I put him in the Derek Jeter category and only wish that Rivera had spent his career in Chicago.
