I got around to watching the premiere episode of Kirstie today (before I am sentenced to 3 hours of The Sound of Music live) and I have to say, it wasn’t terrible.
Kirstie is a new show airing on TV Land starring three people from two of the biggest shows in the history of TV, Cheers and Seinfeld. Kirstie Alley returns as the star of the show bringing Rhea Perlman (Cheers) and Michael Richards (Seinfeld) back to TV with her. This is the first time we have seen Richards on TV since Seinfeld and his infamous melt-down.
Kirstie is about a woman, Maddie (played by Kirstie) who is a rich and famous actress who’s son she gave up for adoption comes back to find her. Richards and Perlman play assistants to Maddie who also seem to be able to tell her what to do.
I have one question for the producers of this show. Why is the show called Kirstie but the main character isn’t named Kirstie? Don’t you do a name like that when you are actually using the stars name in the show? It’s confusing that the show is called Kirstie but she is playing Maddie.
The NY Times said that this show recycles jokes and sitcom stars. I don’t really agree. I thought the show was going to be awful but I was a bit surprised. It’s certainly not the greatest thing ever put on TV, but it’s no where near the worst (2 Broke Girls).
It has a laugh track which is never a good sign for a show but if you look past that, there were several jokes that were funny. Kirstie did the best job of the three but Perlman wasn’t far behind. Richards is playing another version of Kramer and isn’t great but maybe he can improve his character given time.
Overall, I’d give this show a C+. I expected to watch it and die from constantly cringing at the awfulness of the show, but that didn’t happen. If you are interested, Kirstie airs on TV Land Wednesdays at 9:00.
