Key & Peele Ending Their Run
News today that Key & Peele will be ending their run when the current season wraps on Comedy Central. They are currently in their 5th season of the show that has earned multiple Emmy nominations including one for Keegan-Michael Key for best supporting actor.
Key told The Wrap,
“This is our final season – and it’s not because of Comedy Central, it’s us. It was just time for us to explore other things, together and apart. I compare it to Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. We might make a movie and then do our own thing for three years and then come back and do another movie. I’m thinking we could do that every three years – take a year, go bang out a movie. That’s the plan right now.”
On one hand, it’s sad. Key & Peele have been ground breaking on the scale of Dave Chappelle. They dealt with race issues and relationship issues in ways that have not been seen on TV. One of my favorites pointing out racial issues in a funny way was the racist zombies.
That is one of my personal favorites of theirs. It’s not one of their most popular though. One of their sketches is actually being made in to a movie now and it also dealt with race in a funny way. The substitute teacher sketch is one of their funniest sketches and it had us all dying. I have an employee at work who is named Aaron and when I interviewed him, I asked him about his name and he confirmed that yes, he is now called A-Aron by all of his friends. In fact, everyone who finds out his name calls him A-Aron. That sketch has had that much reach and impact on pop culture.
When we talk about their classic sketches though it reminds us why even though we are kind of sad that they are ending this show, the lack of anything really good in the last season or two shows us that it is time and both Key and Peele know it. I have only laughed once or twice in the current season, if that. The Hillary Clinton anger translator was inspired and hilarious, but that was in the premiere episode.
Writing a weekly sketch comedy show is incredibly difficult. Being funny regularly, is next to impossible. Key & Peele have managed to do it more than most and have made a huge impact on pop culture. They had an amazing 5-season run of a show that will be remembered and they are going out on top. You can’t ask for much more than that.
