Words cannot begin describe the joy and relief I have over this announcement, (which doesn’t do me so well as a professional writer, but just bear with me here…) Far and away the best new show this year, HANNIBAL had been struggling a bit with ratings which made me fear the worst, but a combination of high praise from critics (most likely by yours truly) and massive “live plus seven day” DVR ratings increases put it over the edge in NBC’s eyes. The fact that it’s uniquely inexpensive through their international licensing agreements sure doesn’t hurt either.
A second season has been ordered for an additional 13 episodes and will not return until at least midseason of next year if not later. As I said previously, retooling the timeslot and possibly even putting it in the fall alongside similarly themed shows will do wonders for the ratings.
Sayeth NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke: “We’re so proud of Bryan’s vision for a show that is richly textured, psychologically complex, and very compelling. There are many great stories still to be told.”
