Ground Floor premiers tonight with back to back episodes on TBS at 9pm CST. It’s from one of our favorite producers Bill Lawrence (Cougar Town, Scrubs, and Spin City).
Being the bigshot that I am, I was able to watch the premier episode yesterday (On Demand had it). I was slightly disappointed but hopeful.
The gist of the show is the main guy (played by Skylar Austin from Pitch Perfect) is an up and coming young Wall Street investment type. He meets the girl (played by Briga Heelan of Cougar Town fame) who is a happy go lucky regular office worker. It can’t work out for these two can it? They’re so different.
So what was disappointing you ask? The premise of the show pits the top floor Wall Street guys against the regular office workers on the ground floor. The portrayal of the alpha type Wall Street guys was just too over the top. We get it Hollywood elitists you don’t like them. There was no realism to the characters and therefore no ability or desire to connect to the them.
What made Scrubs so awesome is that you loved everyone on the show. You even like Dr. Kelso once you realized he was just trying to do his job the best way he could. In one way or another, you rooted for almost everyone on the show because you could see a piece of yourself in them.
So how am I possibly hopeful for this show? This was just the pilot and the cast of characters (save most of the Wall Street guys) are likeable and interesting. Bill Lawrence knows how to cast a show. This has the potential to have a JD and Elliott type romance and if you don’t know what that is, maybe this show isn’t for you.
I give it a C+ with hope that it can move to a solid B in the future.
