So I watched DOOMSDAY PREPPERS for the first time today after hearing people talk about this show. Let me say first that this is a prime example of people watching a car wreck. The people on this show need help but the National Geographic Channel is exploiting them for their own gain.
The show covers people who are getting ready for some kind of doomsday or another. In the episode I watched, there was a guy preparing for nuclear war with the Russians and a teenage boy preparing for economic collapse.
First let’s talk about the older guy building a bunker. He has spent the last 20 years researching nuclear war and what he needs to do to survive it. He has an underground bunker in an undisclosed location stocked with food and water. He actually does training runs where he locks himself in his bunker for 3 months at a time just to get himself ready for what he will have to do if the nuclear war ever comes.
First of all, what does this guy do for work that he can a) build a bunker, and b) take 3 months off of work a year to go live in the bunker? He has a pretty decent set-up and a large amount of food and water but there are problems. The show has a group of experts rate the Preppers level of preparedness and gives them a rating and how much additional time their set-up would give them. The show is feeding in to the psychosis of the crazy people.
For our nuclear Prepper, the show gives him an additional year of life based on what he has done. I think that is pretty optimistic. This guy’s major problem is that he didn’t really have any security and he was on his own. If the world ends and there are survivors, it won’t take them long to figure out that there is a guy nearby that has food and water. Without security or a way to defend your set-up, you are not going to last very long (have we learned nothing from THE WALKING DEAD?).
The teenage boy on this show was getting ready for the coming economic collapse. I really felt sorry for him watching him on this show. His mother, who should be ashamed of herself, was on the show talking about how this was just a hobby and if she thought he was getting too obsessed, she would make him stop. Lady, he is too obsessed. He is 15 years old and he plans every day for the collapse. It was really very sad.
The show runs commercials throughout the show from a food storage company that I will not link to because I don’t want to give them any traffic in any way. This is the same company that was hyping Y2K and scaring people in to buying their product because everyone would need to be ready for doom. How did that work out?
We watch a lot of TV here at MWTVG and I’ve seen a lot of things that make you scratch your head. We seem to enjoy shows that we can watch to feel sorry about others which make us feel better about ourselves. DOOMSDAY PREPPERS is the worst example of that activity.
I watched it once to see what it was all about and I won’t watch it again. I’m not going to take part in supporting the exploitation of these people. National Geographic Channel should be ashamed of themselves.
