Lorne Michaels has chosen the successor to Seth Meyers at the Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Desk. Colin Jost will replace Seth Meyers when Meyers leaves February 1st to take over as host of Late Night with Seth Meyers. Jost is one of the youngest writers ever to join SNL when he signed on in 2005 as a 22 year old graduate of Harvard. Jost was the President of the Harvard Lampoon which has long been a source of SNL talent.
Jost was named head writer of SNL in 2012 and is the third head writer in a row to take over co-hosting duties on Weekend Update after Tina Fey and Seth Meyers. Jost will join co-host (and Chicagoan) Cecily Strong at the Weekend Update desk after Meyers departs on February 1st.
Getting on Weekend Update has been the surest way to stardom in recent years on SNL. Amy Poehler tells the story of what Lorne had told her after she was chosen to co-host Update. She said that Lorne told her that your whole life will change because you say your name every week on SNL. No one knows better than Lorne what it takes to become a star. Weekend Update is definitely a star maker.
I haven’t been terribly impressed so far with Cecily Strong’s Weekend Update performance but I still have very high hopes for her. It takes some time to find your voice on the update desk so I remain hopeful that she will continue to improve. The addition of Jost, who will be new to being in front of the camera, should help her strengthen her position and might give her the confidence to find her voice.
Weekend Update is regularly one of the best part of each week’s SNL. There is such a long history of success with this segment that I don’t anticipate any problems with this change. I’m looking forward to seeing what this new pair does and I’ll be sure to keep you updated with any additional news that comes out. Here is Colin Jost performing stand-up on Fallon to get your more familiar with him.
