Fondest Television Memories – Tales from the Crypt

In my formative television watching years, there was no better night than Saturday nights.  The lineup was as such:  SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE followed by TALES FROM THE CRYPT followed closely by a couple episodes of MONTY PYTHON’S FLYING CIRCUS.

As a disclaimer, this is back when SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE was funny and still had WILL FERRELL and CHRIS KATTAN before the assclown JIMMY FALLON and COLIN QUINN replaced NORM MACDONALD on Weekend Update and mucked it all up (damn you MIDWEST MIKE… you were spot on).

Getting back to the real purpose of this post, TALES FROM THE CRYPT still reigns supreme in my mind as the pinnacle of horror television.  It ran for 7 seasons between 1989 and 1996 and featured some of the best actors and directors of the time.  Acting alums include BRAD PITT, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER  DANIEL CRAIG, KATEY SAGAL, DEMI MOORE, JOE PESCI and TOM HANKS (among many many more) and guest directors included ROBERT ZEMECKIS and RICHARD DONNER and TOBE HOOPER (again, amongst many others).

TALES FROM THE CRYPT had the perfect mix of dark humor, suspense, star power and cheap nudity (which ranks pretty damn high on the list as a teenager!) to make even the ‘bad’ episodes fun to watch every time.  It was originally adapted from the old 1950′s EC comics and many of the episodes were lifted directly from the EC lineup.  Retooling the Crypt-Keeper into his legendary television persona was a stroke of genius and the series spawned (technically) three movies, two of which (DEMON KNIGHT and BORDELLO OF BLOOD) I consider to be must-watch movies for horror fans.

I will throw out an appeal to all of the high powered television executives that subscribe to MWTVG… please bring back TALES FROM THE CRYPT!  Now is the perfect time to reboot the franchise, and MIDWEST MARK will love you long time for doing so.

Any of our (allegedly) almost double-digit readership have any memories of TALES FROM THE CRYPT?  Please share!

The 10 Funniest Women on TV (currently)

So MIDWEST MO wrote an article the other day asking if women are actually funny.  If you are not a fan of 30 ROCK, you probably missed his reference to the show since that is a question that was asked on last week’s episode.

So before anyone runs off thinking that we here at MWTVG don’t recognize funny when we see it, here are what I think, and we all know that what I think is what matters, are the top 10 funniest women currently (this isn’t an all-time list, they have to be on TV right now) on TV.

#10 – Maya Rudolph

SNL alum Rudolph is a very funny lady.  She is currently starring on NBC’s UP ALL NIGHT along with fellow list member Christina Applegate and ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT genius Will Arnett.  She plays an Oprah-like character who is a talk-show host and is amazingly self-obsessed and clueless (like Oprah) and she is very funny.  UP ALL NIGHT airs on NBC Thursdays at 7:30.

#9 - Christina Applegate

We all remember her as Kelly Bundy from MARRIED WITH CHILDREN, but she has grown up now and she is seriously funny.  She stars with the previously mentioned Rudolph on UP ALL NIGHT as the friend and show producer for Rudolph’s talk show.  She is able to be funny in the work setting on the show and can be funny at home with co-star Will Arnett.  Her comedy is effortless.  Be sure to watch her on NBC Thursdays at 7:30.

#8 – Elisha Cuthbert

We here at MWTVG are big fans of the show she stars on currently, HAPPY ENDINGS, and have talked about it several times.  If you aren’t watching this show, you should be.  It is an ensemble cast (which also stars the funniest guy on TV, Damon Wayans, Jr.) and as far as I’m concerned, she is the funniest woman on the show and one of the funniest women on TV.  HAPPY ENDINGS airs on ABC Tuesdays at 8:00.

#7 – Kaitlin Olson

Sweet Dee from IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA.  This is hands down one of the funniest shows on TV.  Now the guys are the funniest part of this show, but Olson certainly holds her own.  She can do physical comedy as well as any female working today and her timing and delivery are fantastic.  In a show where it would be easy to be over-shadowed by your co-stars, Olson has managed to be her own shining light of funny.  SUNNY airs on the FX Network Thursdays at 9:00.

#6 – Aisha Tyler

Aisha Tyler is an incredible talent.  She has been a host of THE SOUP, done stand-up comedy, is a writer for Jane Magazine, has done action and drama, and is a co-star on another of my favorite shows on TV, ARCHER.  Folks, if you heed my advice ever, and I know you do, you simply must watch this show.  Seasons 1 and 2 are available on Netflix instant streaming right now.  After you are done reading this, go add ARCHER to your instant queue.  Aisha Tyler’s character on the show is a partner to a super spy and she is absolutely brilliant on the show.  The show airs on the FX Network and it’s season premier has not been set yet but, it will feature a crossover with BOB’S BURGERS.

#5 – Kristen Schaal

You might not know who she is because she is not a big name star but she has been popping up in more and more places as her talent has been getting recognized by Hollywood.  She currently stars on two great shows, 30 ROCK and BOB’S BURGERS.  She plays unstable NBC Page Hazel on 30 ROCK and while she has only been a recent addition to the show, her character is very funny and I find myself wanting them to write more and more Hazel in to the show.  On BOB’S BURGERS, she plays maniacal Louise and she is without a doubt, the funniest part of the show.  Schaal is an amazingly funny woman.  30 ROCK airs on NBC Thursdays at 7:00 and BOB’S BURGERS airs on The Fox Network and will be premiering on Sunday, November 11 at  7:30.

#4 – Sofia Vergara

Sophia Vergara and her boobs (seriously, try to find a picture of her that doesn’t feature her boobs.  This one I have here was the best I could find for a family-ish type of a site) star on ABC’s MODERN FAMILY.  It is one of the most popular shows on TV right now and she is hysterically funny on the show.  MODERN FAMILY airs on ABC Wednesdays at 8:00.

#3 – Mayim Bialik

You might remember her as Blossom or for our women readers, you might know her as Dr. Bink from THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER, but what you should know her as is Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler on THE BIG BANG THEORY.  She was added to the show in the 3rd season as a potential love interest for the Aspberger’s having Dr. Sheldon Cooper and their relationship has been one of the highlights of the show.  The comedy brilliance of Bialik in this role is that not only is her relationship with Sheldon funny, but how she interacts with each of the characters on the show is very funny.  There is no situation she can be put in on the show where she can’t get a laugh.  And I know it’s been talked about, but I feel as a professional TV writer that it is my duty to inform  you all again that Bialik is the only person on the show who actually has a PhD.  THE BIG BANG THEORY airs on CBS Tuesdays at 7:00.

#2 – Amy Poehler

Amy Poehler is one of the funniest women on TV.  I’ve been a fan of her for years from when she was a writer for CONAN O’BRIEN’S show and would show up in skits that she would write.  She is a founding member of The Upright Citizens Brigade Theater which was then a sketch comedy show in the late 90s.  She had a stint on SNL and became part of the first all-female Weekend Update duo with her pal Tina Fey.  She has gone on to star in PARKS AND RECREATION which is kind of a spin-off of THE OFFICE but has it’s own character and style.  Poehler’s Leslie Knope character is both funnier and nicer than the huge POS version of her character on THE OFFICE, Michael Scott.  Poehler has been funny for years and she continues to deliver the funny.  PARKS AND RECREATION airs on NBC Thursdays at 8:30.

#1 – Tina Fey

This should really not have been a surprise to anyone reading this list.  Tina Fey is hands down the funniest woman on TV right now.  Fey has a history of being funny from her time as a writer on SNL where she became the first ever female Head Writer on the show and she is the head writer for 30 ROCK where she continues to bring the funny.  Her character on 30 ROCK, Liz Lemon, is brilliant and funny.  The show is funny and smart (which is why it was nearly cancelled in it’s first season because most of America is too stupid to understand this show and if you are reading this and the velcro shoe fits, well…).  If I have one complaint about Fey it’s a complaint that I have about just about all Hollywood women like her.  I can’t stand when smoking hot Hollywood women try to tell me that they are ugly ducklings who never have any dates.  It’s a running theme with Fey and while funny, I know it’s not true about her.  You can see the last season of 30 ROCK on NBC Thursdays at 7:00.

Ok.  So there you have it.  10 women that are on TV that I think are very funny.  Be sure to tell me who I’ve missed or who belongs where on the list.  I’d love to know your thoughts.
