An Idiot Abroad or One and a Half Men

an idiot abroad season 3An Idiot Abroad season 3 premiered tonight on The Science Channel (don’t ask me why this show is on The Science Channel, nothing makes sense any more when it comes to reality shows and the networks they are broadcast on).  If you are not familiar with this show, it stars British comedians Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant who like to torture their slow-witted friend Karl Pilkington by sending him around the world to exotic locations which sounds cool, but Gervais and Merchant make sure that Karl’s trips are done in the most miserable way imaginable to get the highest entertainment value possible.  This is the last season of An Idiot Abroad and there is a twist to this season (all good reality shows have a twist).

After having suffered amazing abuse for 2 seasons at the hands of Gervais and Merchant, Karl apparently gave an ultimatum that he would only do a third season if he wasn’t sent out on the road alone.  Not wanting there to not be a third season and certainly not wanting to go out on the road himself, Gervais enlisted the help of one of his friends, Warwick Davis (who you might remember from Willow), to go out on the road with Karl to ensure that a third and final money-making season of An Idiot Abroad could be filmed.

The season premiere sees Karl and Warwick begin their journey.  Ricky decided that their travel assignment will be to follow the path of Marco Polo on his travels through Europe and the Orient.  Now I don’t know if the addition of Warwick has tempered Ricky’s desire to torture Karl, but this episode didn’t have the mean-spiritedness that I have felt in earlier seasons, which is a good thing.  Karl is so funny on his own that no matter where you put him, he will say things that are funny.  You don’t have to try to make him miserable either.  No matter where he is, he is miserable.

I really liked the direction they are heading for this season.  The addition of Warwick Davis gives Karl someone else to interact with and share the experiences with and I think it’s going to be a better season than the previous two.  Here are some highlights from the first episode of An Idiot Abroad season 3:

An Idiot Abroad airs on The Science Channel Saturday nights at 9:00.  Tune in to this one.
