2013 TV Preview – The Following

Being a Midwest TV Guy/Gal (equal opportunity around here people!!), how are you expected to watch the exorbitant amount of television you do AND keep up on exciting news, reviews and upcoming shows?  By setting your homepage to www.midwesttvguy.com, that’s how!  You are nearly guaranteed 5-10 snarky posts on a daily basis with a solid one-third (minimum) of the information being relevant to anything at all.

In the upcoming weeks, I will be previewing some new shows looming on the horizon for the new year.  But only the shows that interest me personally.  I’ll leave the subpar comedies and GLEE coverage to my fellow blog brethren.

The first new show I would like to showcase is THE FOLLOWING created by KEVIN WILLIAMSON and starring KEVIN BACON (no reference necessary), JAMES PUREFOY (ROME), ANNIE PARISSE (from PERSON OF INTEREST) and SHAWN ASHMORE (Iceman in the X-men movies).

The official synopsis is as such:

“THE FBI estimates there are currently up to 300 active serial killers in the United States. What would happen if these killers had a way of communicating and connecting with each other? What if they were able to work together and form alliances as they left a trail of blood across the country? What if one brilliant and charismatic, yet psychotic serial killer was able to bring them all together and activate a cult of believers following his every command?”

Sounds pretty cool.  I’m a big fan of Kevin Bacon’s more serious roles (a la not FOOTLOOSE) especially in STIR OF ECHOS and more recently in X-MEN FIRST CLASS.  What stands out to me is that KEVIN WILLIAMSON is the writer/creator.  Williamson has some serious success under his belt, but mostly in the pop-culture teenage circuit with such shows as DAWSON’S CREEK, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and SECRET CIRCLE as well as the beloved SCREAM franchise.  It will be interesting to see how that translates over into a serial killer/cop drama.

I sincerely hope that THE FOLLOWING is as good as it sounds and lasts a bit longer than 666 PARK AVENUE did…

Catch the series premiere on Monday January 21st 8:00 MWTVG-time.  I know I will.
