One of the most iconic cannibalistic villains of our time is getting a bit of a reboot as a television series starting in January. Built on the familiar premise of Hannibal Lecter being hired to help profile and catch serial killers, the series starts pre-life-sentences for Dr Lecter and is described by the show’s creator BRYAN FULLER (HEROES) as almost seeming like a buddy-cop drama. According to Fuller, unless the audience is already privy to Hannibal Lecter’s impending people-eating future, they wouldn’t see it coming. Interesting.
Now this is a show that I’m extremely torn about. SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and HANNIBAL (the movie) are two of my favorites. RED DRAGON was pretty good, but HANNIBAL RISING was terrible mostly because when you think about Hannibal Lecter, you automatically think ANTHONY HOPKINS. It’s hard to disassociate the character from the actor.
On the other hand, I am a big fan of the new Hannibal actor, MADS MIKKELSEN who is better known from CASINO ROYALE and CLASH OF THE TITANS. This will be his first foray into an American television series having previously been on two Danish series. It will be interesting to see how he translates from big screen onto small.
HANNIBAL also stars British actor HUGH DANCY as the main FBI agent, CAROLINE DHAVERNAS (DEVIL and the short-lived series WONDERFALLS) and even LAWRENCE FISHBURNE (alot of things) as a fellow agent.
HANNIBAL starts its initial 13 episode season in January on NBC. We will be sure to review Hannibal when it starts airing and let you know what we think. In the mean time, what do you think? Is this a show that you are interested in? Will you be watching Hannibal or ignoring it? Be sure to let us know.
